Hooked tapestry artist and colorist, April DeConick, was awestruck by Rothko’s paintings when she first visited the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel after moving to Houston in 2006. While she has always loved color, the power of the color of Rothko’s paintings to bring her to her knees left its mark. Since then she has been exploring the transcendence of color and its translation to hooked wool surfaces. To achieve stunning fiber color, she designed and sells the Dye Smart™ System and line of Palette Dyes™ for use on animal fibers like wool.

Her hooked artworks have won top awards in juried competitions, been shown in special exhibitions, and published in a variety of venues. She has published articles, books, and a blog on her hooked tapestries, palette dyeing techniques, and Dye Smart™ color system. She was inducted into the Celebration Hall of Fame for Hand-Hooked Rugs in 2018.
