The new collection of works by artist John Bishop is inspired by the second “road” in the Buddhist teaching of the Panca Marga, or Five Paths. John has come to see this framework as a meaningful metaphor for his artistic journey, using each stage as an opportunity for reflection, exploration, and continued growth.

This exhibition presents the second installment of John’s long term legacy project, a 20 year journey in which he will create 20 paintings every five years, resulting in 100 works created between the ages of 60 and 80.

About the Artist: John Bishop is an abstract expressionist painter based in Houston, Texas, who creates gestural mixed media work in acrylics, ink, collage, pencil and marker. His work centers on layering color and mark-making to create works that allow a different experience up close than at a distance. His art draws one deeper into discovery and recognition.

Though his passion for art began as a teenager, he was steered away from an artistic career by well-meaning parents. Instead, he became an English teacher and later a librarian, working in five different countries over the course of three decades. In 2015 he made the life-changing decision to dedicate himself to art full time. John now works as a Spanish teacher at the High School for Law and Justice in Houston.

Drawing on his experience as a creative writer, Bishop applies similar strategies in his painting - crafting layers of meaning and emotion through form, color, and texture. His work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. In addition to his artistic practice, Bishop is an active member of the art community and he founded Aripa Arte, a nonprofit organization that supports Romanian artists.
