Houston artist Erika Alonso presents a powerful solo exhibition, On the Brink, in the Bay 100 Gallery at the Silos at Sawyer Yards. She writes:
"We are on the brink of so many things, and they all seem to be arriving tomorrow. But tomorrow keeps escalating into the next tomorrow, and there is no room left to take a pause, to think, to feel any of it through. We are stimulated past the point of seeing."
These watercolor paintings are the result of what happens when Erika Alonso manages to refuse the doom scroll (she doesn't always succeed). The large compositions are largely abstract, but have palpable depth that draws you in to investigate the layers, and the wide variety of dynamic marks that Alonso build up to just the right point of tension.
Visitors are invited to take a moment to reflect upon these landscapes and whatever creatures and stories they find waiting there. Join Alonso in Bay 100 Gallery on June 5, from 6-9 pm for a public reception.
About the Artist:
Erika Alonso (b. 1987) is a Houston-based artist whose work explores environmental fragility, displacement, and the life of the imagination, conjuring narrative landscapes—spacious, imagined terrains animated by lyrical lines, repetition, and ritual. The artist's process embraces both structured wonder and spontaneous emergence. She works from her studio at Winter Street Studios in Houston.
Alonso is the recipient of a Spring Creative Award from the Wendy Wagner Foundation (2024) and a SACI grant from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance (2022), and served as Artist-in-Residence at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in 2023.
