Joyce Matula Welch: Small Things

Sawyer Yards is pleased to present a new installation at TANK Space, Spring Street Studios, by artist Joyce Matula Welch. The opening reception will take place from 5:00 - 8:00 pm on Saturday, December 10, 2022. The exhibition will run through February 18, 2023.

It is the small things that are often overlooked, or not even seen. The focus of this exhibit is the hidden life of slugs, frogs, toads and small birds. Each sculpture is made out of fused glass. This glass can reflect and absorb light. When melted in the kiln it becomes viscous. Layering colored glass and glass frit in breakable molds creates unexpected color combinations. Natural colors have been chosen to replicate the camouflage ability of small creatures. There is strength and fragility in the world of the small. Look and see, find and discover what hides in the tank.

Joyce Matula Welch grew up spending weekends at her grandparent’s farm in rural Texas. There she learned to appreciate the trail of a slug, the flight of a sparrow and the singing of toads. These early experiences informed her artistic vision.
