The Magic of Life features over 200 photo-based works and creative writings from over 300 students that illustrate the enchantment of everyday life. The students’ approaches take the form of photographs in mixed media, layered collages, and whimsical watercolors.
Complementing these visual explorations are heartfelt odes celebrating friendship, observations on the significance of play, and other compelling reflections. The photography and writing in The Magic of Life illuminate student perspectives that pause, observe, and reflect on ordinary moments and reignite youthfulness for all.
The Magic of Life is the 2025 installment of FotoFest’s FotoFinish exhibition with student artwork from the FotoFest Learning Program’s 2024–25 year. The exhibition culminates the photography and writing projects made from classroom visits, workshops, and summer camp using the Literacy Through Photography (LTP) curriculum.
This year, the Learning Program facilitated the LTP curriculum in sixteen classrooms across seven schools and community partnerships in the Greater Houston area. Through weekly lessons, students discuss art, make images, and generate writing based on themes of self, home, community, and dreams to create works of art and share their stories, perspectives, and dreams.
FotoFinish 2025: The Magic of Life is co-organized by the FotoFest Learning Program manager Chelsea Jones, coordinator Haven Jones, and educator Joynear Duncan. The exhibition is on view from June 6 to July 19 in the Silos Bay 200 gallery at Sawyer Yards in Houston.
