Sabine Street Studios presents Beyond the Flesh, a powerful two-person exhibition featuring artists Constance Braden and Tod Bailey, curated by Justin Earl Grant. Through their respective art practices, both artists seek to reach interior spaces of the human mind and body, with radically different approaches.

Constance Braden's large narrative pastel drawings on paper are embedded with symbolism and poetry directed at the spiritual facets of being a human. They are delicate and soft. Although monumental, there is a weightlessness which at times lifts the viewers off the ground and suspends them within some foreign yet welcoming environment.

Tod Bailey's strong, gestural paintings go straight at the viewer and may elicit confrontation, but perhaps accompanied by humor or absurdity. The active thought and raw emotions are made visible by the protuberance of the paint. The circus of bodies and forms pile up on one another, highlighting the material nature of being whereas we are constantly occupying a space where others are not.

The magical figures within both artists' works exist within the same dreamscape, but their origins and motives differ, depending on the trust and the risk the viewer takes in allowing themselves to be inhabited by these figures. Join the artists for a public reception on March 5, from 6-9pm, in the North Gallery at Sabine Street Studios.

About the Artists:

Constance Braden is a mystic-minimalist, Zen practitioner, yogi, and dream worker. Braden arrived at drawing later in life, beginning her practice at the age of 50. She is the founder and primary teacher at Houston Iyengar Yoga Studio.

Tod Bailey’s paintings illustrate a life that is dedicated to the exploration and expression of its pains, pleasures and what may lie between. Immersing himself in art history and essential art movements, literature and culture, Bailey creates bold and energetic works that are at once engaging and challenging.
