Multiplicity is an exhibition originating from an advanced ceramic class taught by Jeff Forster in which students propose a project that implements the use of multiples resulting in a final sculpture or installation.
Projects can range from functional to sculptural, architectural to intimate, and can achieve this through modularity and/or accumulation. In this class, students use the transformative power of repetition resulting in works where pattern can become structure, small objects acquire scale, and iteration feeds intention.
Spring Semester 2026, 16 students participated in this class. While each artist brings their unique aesthetic, the works are unified by the challenge of working in multiples. Additionally, an overall theme has emerged that speaks to the human condition and how we connect to our world. Visitors will encounter a range of installation and sculpture, including figurative, nature based, and abstract work. The work of the human hand is seen in each piece sometimes with precision that evokes handiwork like stitching and knitting. Other works retain fingerprints of the making blending in with the texture of the piece.
