Detroit native Glen Carpenter moved to Houston and fell in love with the city’s zoning laws.

Or lack thereof.

In Houston, high-end shopping, derelict buildings, public spectacle and excellent coffee can exist within a single block. Glen photographs the unlikely relationships that result—people and places that become more interesting when they refuse to fit neatly together.

His studio work begins with an idea but rarely ends there. The people he photographs bring their own movement, humor and personality to the session, and the original plan is allowed to change. Sometimes the smallest accident becomes the photograph.

Whether working on the street or in the studio, Glen is drawn to images that leave something unresolved. His ongoing series Faceless Women considers how much a portrait can communicate through gesture, posture and clothing when the face is hidden.

He makes photographs because the world is strange, people are complicated, and occasionally the camera notices before he does.
