Jennifer Marion at Slowpokes: Community Workshop and Screening
- Friday, May 15, 2026
Slowpoke's Coffee at Sawyer Yards1501 Silver Street
Artist and Jennifer Marion is coming to Slowpoke's Coffee at Sawyer Yards! Join her for a community art-making workshop and an artist talk culminating in a screening on a box truck. See details below!
Community Workshop: 3–5 pm | An open workshop for anyone who wants to come make something. Inspired by the central question of the project: what does the distance between us look like from where you're sitting? Participants would make work together in response: drawing, writing, found objects, whatever feels right — creating a space to reflect on separation, travel, and belonging through a creative lens. No art experience necessary. Open to all. Some materials will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own.
Meet up/Gather: 7:30pm
Artist Talk: 7:45pm
Truck Screening: 8:00 pm | A rental truck parked on the street outside Slowpokes would serve as a traveling projection space, screening video work from A to B. B to A. Repeat., a project documenting my bi-weekly custody exchange commute between Houston and Beaumont. The screening is free and open to the public, bringing contemporary video art directly to the community without gallery barriers or admission fees.
About the Artist: Jennifer Marion is an interdisciplinary artist from Louisiana, raised in Tennessee, and currently based in Houston, TX. Her art practice engages with photography, video, textiles, sound, and installation to investigate generational trauma and the suppression and silencing of the female voice through the accumulation of everyday materials such as party supplies, receipts, and magazine clippings. Describing herself as a "polite menace," she uses art to transform personal trauma into something that can be shared rather than something that swallows her whole, creating a place where her identities as a queer mother intersect.
Marion holds an MFA from the University of Houston and received her BFA from Lamar University. A 2026 recipient of the Idea Fund, her work has been recognized through awards including Best in Show at the Sojourn International Art Exhibition and a permanent collection placement at the Gainesboro Modern Contemporary Art Museum. She has exhibited at Blaffer Art Museum, The Orange Show, Lawndale Art Center, and Elgin Street Studios in Houston, as well as internationally in Rome, Italy. Her work has been published in Soft Lighting Zine and Photo Trouveé Magazine, and she is co-founder of the space in between gallery. Marion is currently teaching Photography and Digital Media at San Jacinto College.
